Worm Farming Archives

Question by angie59m: WORM FARMERS Assist! Is worm compost oderless TO ANIMALS/PESTS?
it is a wiggler worm farm stackable outdoor/indoor farm I want to leave it outside but afraid animals, rodents and so on will get into it. I know the forbidden products and that meat, dairy, seafood, grass clipping/pruning are not allowed. I dont like newspaper or paper towels. What the worms consume is what comes out in your garden that we eat. So, with all that in mind, can I leave the farm outside w/out holding it down securely w/a thing. The litature I recieved w/the farm says absolutely nothing about this situation. Thanks, I hope some excellent worm farmers respond!

Properly, worms are required. The finest kind are red wrigglers which eat a lot more quickly than other sorts of worms. You will need to have a bin to put them in, like a excellent sized plastic bin with a lid - not a clear one particular. Drill a lot of 1/4 inch holes close to the prime of the bin and 12 or so 1/8 inch holes in the bottom for drainage. You want shredded paper and shredded leaves and some chopped up vegetable peels for the bedding. Prepare the bedding a week or far more ahead of you get your worms. They don't like a new, sterile environment. The bedding really should be damp like a wrung out sponge. Get the worms and put them into the bedding. Do not attempt to spread them all about. Let them do that on their personal. Cover the bedding with a piece of wet cardboard. Following about a week, begin to feed the worms with coffee grounds, chopped up fruit and vegetable peels, and so forth. No meat or greasy food. When the worms are employed to their surroundings they will be eating a pound of food per pound of worms a day.

If the worms are not content, they will attempt to get out of the bin. Make positive their bedding is not too damp. Take off the lid and place a light on the bin to hold the worms inside. They will want to keep away from daylight.

Oh, and do not use bagged potting soil in the bedding as it could include fertilizer which is negative for the worms. You could use some peat moss.

Question by kriend: I'm accidently developing a worm farm, what must I do with the worms?
Left a metal tray on leading of some dirt, came back two weeks later and I have each size worms.

I'm not going to consume, or fish with them.
How the worms got there-a rabbit hutch sets above. The tray on the ground holds the rabbit manure which I place in the garden. I forgot to empty the tray and the manure spilled onto the ground. The worms have been composting it. I preserve a rabbit or two as pets, solely for the manure, and now I guess for the worms too. We've had excess rain in our location too so I am confident all the moisture has helped.
